I had never heard the term “elevenses” until I saw it on a menu in Scotland. I assumed it was the proprietor showing some whimsy for those who require a bite to eat between breakfast and lunch.
It wasn’t until some time later that I learn it’s an actual “thing” and not just in the UK, but around the world.
Today I enjoyed some blueberry scones and Formosa Oolong tea for my elevenses. Rounding out the quick bite was finishing off the homemade holiday jam my friend back in NY made me. The combination of sweet scones and jam with the rich, Harney & Sons oolong made for a delightful snack.
Elevenses /ɪˈlɛvənzɪz/ is a short break taken at around 11:00 a.m. to consume a drink or snack. The names and details vary among countries.
